Brita filter recycling now at all three Medway tips

Used Brita water filter cartridges can now be recycled at all three of Medway’s household waste and recycling centres. Collection points went live at the Capstone, Cuxton and Hoath Way sites on Friday 7 August, Medway Council has announced.

Until now the cartridges have been an awkward item to dispose of locally, with no drop-off point at Medway’s own sites. Brita runs its own take-back programme, and Medway’s three centres have now joined it. The council says the programme has 1,300 collection units installed across the UK and recycled 1.73 million filter cartridges in 2024.

How it works

Take your used cartridges with you on your next trip to any of the three centres and drop them at the Brita collection point. The scheme is for Brita-branded filters; for other brands, the council says to contact the manufacturer to find recycling locations.

The usual rules for visiting a Medway tip still apply, so book your visit online before you go.

Cllr Simon Curry, Portfolio Holder for Climate Change and Strategic Regeneration, said: “This is a fantastic addition to our sites that will reduce both plastic and carbon waste, contributing to a cleaner and greener Medway. I would like to encourage Medway residents to make use of this new way to recycle whenever possible, and to thank officers for getting Medway involved with the programme.”

What it means for you
