Chatham High Street and the Pentagon Shopping Centre are given over to a free family event this Saturday, 29 August, from 10am to 4pm.

Super Saturday is run by Child-Friendly Medway. Medway Council lists the practical details as a drop-in at the Pentagon Shopping Centre, High Street, Chatham, ME4 4HY.

Book the craft activity, turn up for the rest

This is the bit people miss. The event is drop-in, but the craft activity has to be booked in advance. Booking is free, and the council links to it from the page above.

Everything else needs no booking.

What is on

From the council’s announcement of 17 August:

  • classic cars from the cinema, to get close to and photograph
  • a hero-themed trail around the town centre
  • design-your-own-mask activities
  • meeting superheroes
  • a giant Stay Puft Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters
  • council services and partners, with stands on what they do for families

Cllr Adam Price, portfolio holder for children’s services, said the day is “a chance to find out about the fantastic work that the Child-Friendly Medway team are doing” as well as a day out.

The last chance to vote for the Young Mayor in person

Saturday is also the last event where children and young people can cast a vote for Medway’s first Young Mayor face to face. Cllr Price described it as “the last opportunity for children and young people to vote for our first ever Young Mayor”.

The ballot itself stays open a little longer. It closes on Monday 31 August, and every child aged 7 to 18 living in Medway gets one vote. We covered the eight candidates and how the deputy roles work in Medway’s Young Mayor vote.

What it means for you

If you are bringing children into Chatham on Saturday:

  • it runs 10am to 4pm and it costs nothing
  • book the craft activity ahead if you want it, on the council’s events page
  • it is spread across the High Street and inside the Pentagon, so part of it is under cover
  • any Medway child aged 7 to 18 can vote for the Young Mayor there, with nothing to bring
