Canteen by Gurkha Fire opened at 245A Chatham High Street on 3 November, a street food sister to the five-rated Gurkha Fire on New Cut. Bookings are open.
A new restaurant from the team behind Gurkha Fire opened on Chatham High Street on Tuesday.
Canteen by Gurkha Fire said on Instagram that it was opening on 3 November and that bookings are open. It is at 245A High Street, ME4 4BQ, according to its food hygiene registration.
What it serves
Canteen is a street food sister to Gurkha Fire. A preview post shared on Canteen’s account describes the difference this way:
- Nepalese, Indo-Chinese and wider Asian street food, where Gurkha Fire is purely Nepalese
- individual servings rather than dishes to share
- smaller portions at more affordable prices
- an open kitchen
Canteen’s own opening day post promoted samosa chaat.
We could not find a published menu, prices or regular opening hours. It said it was open from 11am on opening day.
Who is behind it
Gurkha Fire is a Nepalese restaurant at Chatham Fire Station, New Cut. The Food Standards Agency gave it a rating of 5 on 25 September.
Canteen is registered with the agency but is listed as awaiting inspection, which means it has no rating yet.
Cllr Harinder Mahil is Medway Council’s portfolio holder for regeneration. His register of interests records that he is a director of Gurkha Fire Ltd and owns a third of it. We have not seen a public record showing which company operates Canteen.
What it means for you
It is one more independent place to eat on the High Street, a short walk from Gurkha Fire. Canteen says tables can be booked through the link on its Instagram profile.
